Explore the use of music and drama based techniques to accelerate learning language and reading skills.

Participants will experience how rhythm and music can help learners develop phonemic awareness and phonics skills. Activities that use drama to develop language acquisition and reading comprehension skills will also be demonstrated.

Elizabeth Johnston

Elizabeth is the Supervisor of Literacy Programs at YWCA Northwestern Illinois.

She supervises the Adult Volunteer Tutoring program with over 30 years of expertise in reading instruction, instructional coaching, and instructional design.

Elizabeth authored multiple levels of curriculum for Reading In Motion, a Chicago based not-for-profit. Under her direction Reading In Motion’s curricula and research gained national recognition in the Journal of Educational Research (2000 and 2012) and Evaluation Review (2003).

She holds a Bachelor’s Degree of Fine Arts from Rockford University and is an ICCB Standards Proficient Instructor.
